The biggest cruise line is Carnival Corporation.  Carnival Corporation owns:

The line with the biggest ships is Royal Caribbean.

In 1996 Carnival started sailing the Carnival Destiny.  This was the first cruise ship to exceed 100,000 Gross Registered Tones (a space rating - not a weight rating) and was at the time the biggest cruise ship.

In 1998 Princess started sailing the Grand Princess.  At 109,000 GRT it was, at that time the largest cruise ship.

In 1999 the Voyager of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) started sailing.  At 138,500 GRT it was the biggest cruise ship.

In 2004 the Queen Mary 2 (Cunard) started sailing.  At 150,000 GRT it was the biggest ship (though it is actually an ocean liner).

In 2006 the Freedom of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) started sailing.  At 154,000 GRT it is the biggest cruise ship currently sailing (along with its sisters, the Liberty of the Seas and the Independence of the Seas which will start sailing later in 2008).

Then in 2009 the Genesis ship (Royal Caribbean) will begin sailing.  At 220,000 it will be the largest ship.  In 2010 Genesis 2 will begin sailing.

Later in 2008 the Carnival Splendor will begin sailing.  At 113,000 it will be Carnival's largest ship.

In 2009 the Carnival Dream will being sailing.  At 130,000 GRT it will be Carnival's largest ship (not counting the Queen Mary 2 which belongs to Cunard with is owned by Carnival Corporation).  In 2011 the Carnival Magic will join the fleet.  The Carnival Magic will also be 130,000 GRT.

FYI - Royal Caribbean also owns Celebrity, Pullmantur Cruises and Azamara Cruises.

The new Carnival ships are being built by Fincantieri, which is in Italy.  The new Royal Caribbean ships are being built by Aker Yards which is in Finland.  Another builder capable of building large ships is Meyer Werft in Germany.  It is building three 122,000 GRT ships for Celebrity.
