I have been told by many people that about 3 yrs is perfect because then the older one is able to do most things on their own and they are able to help out immensly and they are at the age where they want to help out.  My children are 3yrs 4 mos apart and so far it is working out great.

It's really a personal choice. My husband and I are already talking about having another one 2-5 years after we have this one.
