What do you think is the best way to disquise dated wall panelling?

It's thoughout the entire house. I don't really like the paintable "popcorn" texture wallpapers. Will the plain papers stick well without much seams showing? I started one area: sanded, filled the gaps with poly-filler, and sanded again. It is a lot of work to do the entire house this way.

  1. Hi, sheet rock is still cheap, lol, too much work? Try wall paper backing, it's a stiff paper to use before you put on wall coverings over panelling or blocks. Goes up like wall paper, paint it! B

  2. i would say to fill the crevices and sand it down afterwards so youve got one smooth wall and then paint it...it will look like a regular wall, however, no matter what you do, if you dont want it to look like panelling, its going to be a hard job

  3. dated wall paneling has the streaks in it doesn't it.  You didn't mention painting it.  I would paint one room at least to see what it looked like.  The other thing I would do is tear it down and put up dry wall.  I've gotten pretty proficient in drywall and can put it up pretty fast and make it look pretty good.  This will give you an opportunity to look behind your walls, especially the outside walls and find out what kind of insulation you have.

  4. Susa,  Hey I painted over my old paneling a while back in our old house. Everyone thought it would be horrible, but everyone ate their words.  The great thing about painting is you can do it over and over again, with very little work.  SO if you get tired of one decor, you can change it very easily.  There are so many textures you can create with paint too.  Wall paper is very time consuming, and if you find you don't care for it, it is quite a job to remove.  I hope this helps.  Good luck!

  5. Leave the grooves and seams alone and paint it a light solid background color. Then go back over it with a diluted wash of a color, It will look great, a softly distressed finish that will harmonize w/ any imperfections that might be in it.

Go to the big box paint depts for ideas of colorwash combinations or ck the sources here:

  6. Stucco.

The grooves will show through on paper. Filling the gaps is the other way, but like you said, its a pain.

  7. I wouldn't wall paper panelling, cause you are going to hate it. I have seen people paint panelling with a cream with a yellow tint to it and it looks really nice.

  8. Either remove the paneling, or put a layer of gyp board over the paneling.
