  1. I would go with the D90, the 24fps D-movie mode could come in great handy for shooting sports.  Also, it is a Nikon, meaning that the thing will basically never break, and takes Nikkor lenses, which are as good as lenses get.

And if you're shooting sports pictures be prepared to pay 1,500 dollars or more for your lens in addition the the D90's 1,000 dollar price tag.

  2. Usually the newer the technology, the longer it will last.

Generally you will have to replace your camera body every 18-24 months to keep up with the technology ... Pros budget for that and set their fees accordingly.

At present a used D200 costs as much as a new D90.  Both will last longer than the technology ... I have an old Nikon D100 that still works just fine, but my clients want image files that are larger than the D100 will produce ... So I use either a D300 or D3 when shooting assignments ... for sports, you will find that the lenses will cost more than your body.  For your needs now, the Nikon 70-300 mm vr will be fine, however start saving your pennies now, because if you go pro, you will need the Nikon 400 mm f/2.8 at one point and that little lens costs over $7000.

The D200 while an excellent camera, is over three years old
