depends on what aspect.  

for tenacious survival for millions of years -- the cockroaches are a candidate.

for being able to change their environment to suit their needs and for coming up with wonderful inventions to make life more interesting and for seemingly unlimited capability to invent and discover more -------give it to us humans.

the question is what is the most SUCCESSFUL animal that has ever lived on the earth.... and the answer is obvious, US!! sure these other creatures (cockroaches etc.) have been around for centuries, but what have they done? what success other than survival do they have? none to speak of, but we have shaped formed and molded the earth to our liking and have built and constructed many things and ways of doing things.

even though i absolutely loathe them...i guess cockroaches because they´ve survived for an incredibly long time. they existed when the dinosaurs were around and they´re still here now
