I think it's very sad that Canadian athletes get such little funding in sports. It is embarrassing on an international level when it takes one week to win one medal at the Olympics. Your thoughts?

  1. The funding is just fine where it is.

The team we have there is doing a great job and the next person that says they arent or that they are embarrased should get thier butt in gear and go compete themselves.

The cost involved in training an olympic athlete is quite high. The sam amount of money can be spent helping more kids get into organized sports such as football and hockey etc.

Our country is rather small in population as compared to the states and china. Therefore we have less athletes and coaches to choose from.

We as a country should be proud of the job that has been done and the medals we have won.Spending more money will not make anyone beat Phelps nor beat tthe Chinese gymnasts so get over it we are doing just fine.

If you can't look and be proud then don't watch.

  2. 2008 Summer Olympics (Beijing):

Population of United States: 301,139,947 (July 2007 est.)

Total Medals in 2008 Olympics: 65

Average: 1 Medal per 4,632,922 Citizens

Population of Canada: 33,390,141 (July 2007 est.)

Total Medals in 2008 Olympics: 7

Average: 1 Medal per 4,770,020 Citizens

By this, Canada seems to be on par with the United States in the 2008 Summer Games

    2006 Winter Olympics (Turin):

Population of United States: 301,139,947 (July 2007 est.)

Total Medals in 2006 Olympics: 25

Average: 1 Medal per 12,045,597 Citizens

Population of Canada: 33,390,141 (July 2007 est.)

Total Medals in 2006 Olympics: 24

Average: 1 Medal per 1,391,255 Citizens

By this, Canada appears to be far ahead of the United States in winter competitions.

In the end, I don't think Canada is doing too bad at all.

  3. But this is the summer olympics...your more of a winter olympic sport country. Don't you think?

  4. It's looking up, 7 medals in 2 days! I know that's nothing compared to the US and China, but I'm really happy for them. And about funding, I think the government is spending a lot more on training the Winter Olympic athletes. Since we're hosting, we've got to look really good in 2010.

  5. I haven't seen that many in many events, and it disgusts me... canada should definitally get more funding

  6. they could of done better

  7. Absolutely nothing

  8. Standard for Canada, but rather embarrassing when Kazakhstan has more medals than them

  9. Well, we just had to wait for Canada's good sports.  It's sad that we had to wait but now we're in 15th place (right?). I'm just glad we have had to multi-medal days already. The forcast is 17 medals and no gold. But we've already gotten 2 gold and proabably more on the way, so who knows? Maybe will get more than 17.

    GO CANADA!!!!!

  10. When you consider that the population of Canada is perhaps 1/6 of the USA - and - when you consider the fact that so much of Canada is above the 50th parallel where summer only lasts for 8-10 weeks at best, it wouldn't be realistic for Canada to compete on a level playing field with the nations in summer climates.

Having said that, It is clear that money is what drives the Olympic games and the Olympic Athletes get large sums of money from corporate sponsors to train and live.  Much of the world gets its TV coverage from NBC who paid the IOC billions of dollars to cover the games.  Since NBC is based in the USA and the bulk of its viewers are US citizens, its not surprising that  US corporations clamor to sign up US athletes for endorsements that they can promote during the Olympic games.

What surprises me is that about 25% of all Canadians live in Southern Ontario between Windsor, Niagara Falls up the QEW along to Toronto to Kingston.   The proximity to the USA ought to be a money draw for corporate sponsorship, but it isn't.

I think that large Canadian Company's such as Molson etc. ought to step and support Canadian Athletes financially.   Pretty good idea Eh ?

  11. Actually I didn't actually notice Canada was doing poorly until someone brought it up a few days ago.

You guys have the winter olympics so....

  12. Olympics is a scale of a nation's health and lifestyle.

    example:

if you suddenly pluck out four  7 year old kids from Europe,USA,Australia  and Canada.

make them compete in any sport.

The European, Australian and American kids would compete and challenge each other with their skills and determination.

the Canadian kid, would just be the friendliest.
