  1. It's a great camera, but unless you're keen on using the manual modes and advanced features, there's no point in buying this camera. Do you consider yourself getting into photography as a serious hobby, or do you just want to take the occasional photo? The G9 is more for the advanced photographer who is interested in taking photography further. There are better and cheaper cameras for the beginner photographer, namely the Canon PowerShot SD850 IS, SD1000, A590 IS, A720 IS.

  2. Since you're a beginner, a $500 camera is probably going to be too much.  It is meant to be both a P&S and fully manual camera.  Save some money, get a cheaper one in the Canon line (if you want Canon).  The SD1100 is good, as is the A590.  They're both current cameras and good quality.

  3. Not a great choice, unless you know exactly what you want it for!

Canon "G" series has been long marketed as affordable camera with a full set of manual controls, that should be good for serious amateurs or photographers on a tight budget. It's got all the features of pro camera, but is fitted in P&S body, and while it's sensor is bigger than many other P&S it's just not to the par of real SLR. So quality is going to suffer. And of course no real through the lens view.

Since the time when Nikon and Canon began marketing affordable SLR's that cost about as much as "G" cameras, the only market for "G" is a compromise for someone who wants a very advanced camera, but refuses the size and/or weight of an actual SLR.

Buying it to use on full automatic mode is a waste of money. On the other hand if you want more control, you can get Nikon D40 or Canon Digital Rebel with a basic lens for about the same money. And either would be a lot more of a camera for the same buck. And don't mind lower megapixels. Given the bigger sensor size and fewer megapixels, the budget SLR's I mentioned will beat G9 in performance and quality hands down!

A good piece of reading regarding the megapixels is here:

So, if you are a beginner and are serious about photography, that is you want it to be a serious hobby - get an SLR. If you are not sure, or are a beginner in a sense that you've never had a digital camera before, and are not sure what to do with it, get Canon "A" series camera for less than half the cost. Somewhere in between the two? Look at Canon S5. Still a lot cheaper, but has enough advanced features to satisfy your hunger for some time, and a great image stabilized zoom.

    Good luck,

    LEM.

  4. for a beginner - it is too much camera

go to canonusa.com to check them out

    you decide
