What do you think of John McCain saying that he "doesn’t work for a party"?

It was an excellent political maneuver. Great speech writing from his team as it is very embarrassing to be associated with the Republican Party and George Bush. I think he earned a few independent/undecided votes with that.

Do Republicans believe that it was a clever lie and he'll work for their causes if he gets elected? Or do Republicans believe that he is truly a maverick and want him to work with both Republican and Democrats to make change?

  1. He is not going to go to too many either.

  2. I thought it was a good speech, and he is known for stepping on toes and voting for what he thinks is right, even if he isnt in lockstep with the party. I dont always agree with him on that stuff, but at least hes consistent. My favorite line in the whole speech was when he said he would veto any earmark that came to his desk and he would make the people who tried to get it through famous. He aint playin and I really think his attitude is what we need in there.

  3. It was obviously bullshit. This coming from a guy who voted 95% with Bush. He has a lot of nerve to say that "he doesn't work for a party"

  4. I dont think that republicans will admit that it is a clever lie because most of them already believe he is the right choice for president.

I personally think he wont stick with this motto and just work for the republican party. I have heard that he voted along party lines (and sided with Bush) more than one time, but i dont know how much of it is true. I think the differences on key issues between him and the democrats will prevent that from happening for the most part.

  5. He's pulling in the Ron Paul supporters with that statement as well as people who just don't trust the Republicans because of GWB.  It was a great move!  Obama is smoking cigarettes again now!

  6. BS.

Why doesn't he run as an independent then?

  7. All we have to do is ask ourselves one question.  If McCain doesn't work for a party, why didn't he dissociate himself from all of them and have his own no party convention?  Sorry, but this is sheer political skulduggery.  It is merely a ruse set by a skulking wolf intended to draw unwary voters into his trap.  Then once the wolf has his hapless victims' votes safely in the ballot box, he merely takes off the disguise to reveal his true self, a ravenous Repugnican.

  8. i too think it was an excellent speech strategy. as far as whether he was being sincere or just looking for the undecideds votes I would like to think that that is the way that he plans on approaching the presidency. It would only be wise considering what little faith most people have in the government itself at this point and time.

  9. It was clever indeed and won me over. Looking at his history he isn't a stereotypical Republican and has a lot of experience. I just don't agree with his VP, she needs to go back to Alaska.

  10. If he won any votes it will be from very very very very dumb people who are dumb as door nails

Brilliant speech writing but what is a speech if one can not speak with real feeling

Trying to portray HE IS NOT A SENATOR WITH THE REPUBLICANS FOR PAST 26 years and he doesn't belong to Bush and is not part of the people who help PUT this country where it is

Maverick....maybe years years and years ago when Regan was alive..now

Come on wake up and give head a shake people this is not JUST the Republicans country as they feel it is

News flash......he was not only person who was POW there were 600 other men..we don't hear about..seems he believes he is only one who GAVE for their country

Country first flag wrapping condescending pit-bulls with lipstick lovers are again trying to use fear to get votes YET again...why use 9-11 tapes they believe only Their families died that day

Where was their hero Bush with the bull horn or mission accomplished

    tape

Boring speech with little substance and full of himself only when he said drill drill drill, fight fight with me did they wake up and ended us hearing the people shouting AGAINST Mc Bush......can not even keep their party safe for one night never mind the country

  11. Although I'm a Clinton supporter for McCain, I agree that this was more excellent political manoeuvring from John.  The Republican nominee has to walk a tightrope, in that it would be absolutely impossible for McCain not to acknowledge an incumbent president who sits on the same side of the political fence as him, however McCain understands that the Republican political brand has been badly damaged because of George W. Bush, so he also has to do everything he can to distance himself from everything that's bad about Dubya, including the president's poor job approval numbers.  McCain's assertion that he doesn't work for a party hopefully creates this distance from that Republican branding problem!

  12. He'll say anything to get elected.

In all seriousness, he knows that so many Democrats are gonna bail on their Muslim leader that he can cull them into following him by appearing mildly moderate.

  13. I am a Republican since 1970 and I believe McCain is really a maverick

  14. hes a liar he should switch to teh independent party if he feels that way

  15. Republicans believe all manner of nonsense. So far what little he's said about the economy, health care, etc is more vintage Bush. Give more to the rich, give more to the corporations and it will magically trickle down to the working class. Except we know the concentration of wealth at the top has only accelerated under Bush. So only a complete moron believes a word of that c**p from last night.

  16. I love it... he totally threw ALL republicans under the bus.... ahhaha.

Doesn't fool me... but his supporters should be hurting right about now.

  17. I think some republican mouths were hanging open at that.

  18. He is a Maverick... he votes how he feels is best for the country... like every elected official should (not just care abut how it will make them look)... And when he sets his mind to something he sees it through...

And if that means going against his own party well he's shown that he'll do it.

You really can't generalize about any of the parties because just as each person is an individual, their values and views are their own.

And who knows if he's lying or telling the truth... Like Every presidential candidate (after Washington, who didn't really want to be president in the first place) they all tell you what you want to hear... but McCain has known what the Republicans wanted to hear before anyone else and hasn't changed his statements since he started his campaign...

  19. John McCain is a liar. Picking Sarah Palin shows he has no interest in being a moderate willing to work with a Democratic Congress. He can't have and won't get it both ways.
