Some people are up in arms but I say bring back the rivalry - we all know how much Launceston clubs hate Hobart clubs and vice-versa!

Seriously, other states have a state-wide league and can still support a team int he AFL, so I dont get what the problem is...

The Devils were not competetive inthe VFL anyway.

  1. I reckond they r getting way to favoured i mean picks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15. 48 senior players 9 rookies 1million more $ able to get 10 pre-listed players at end of 1st year and can sign up to 16 uncontracted players 5 09 rookie picks plus 1st pick in every round Freo never got that in there 1st year

  2. Could be they are starting the push for a Tassie AFL team. The sooner the better, instead of the GC and West Sydney.

  3. Not a Taswegian, you guys got to work it out for yourselves - as I'm sure you know there is Aus wide support for a Tas team.

Many Vics want Tas to remain a nursery that they can rape for playing talent. The Hawks are so happy receiving millions of dollars of taxpayers money as sponsorship, so they are out there white anting.

I can tell you the WA league is based on one city.

Stop fighting each other, pull together & demand relocation of one of non performing franchises in Melbourne.

  4. Very stupid idea. The major reason the SWL didn't work in the first place was that nobody cared!

Anyone interested in local footy in Tassie will have their favourite side, and that side has traditional rivalries. Sth Launceston v North Launceston, Glenorchy v Clarence etc. But where is the rivalry between Sth Launceston and Glenorchy? There is none, despite the Launceston/Hobart thing.

Plus, it brings nothing to Tassie footy. The Devils at least gave promising kids a chance to show their wares in front of potential AFL suitors.

The state should be putting a lot of money into getting the Mariners back into the TAC cup and producing a lot more AFL talent. Maybe even put in a Hobart and a Launceston under 18's into the TAC cup so that they can turn the North/South rivalry into a positive.

Forget the SWL, it is pointless and a massive waste of money.

  5. I think that it will be a good way to measure how popular an AFL team in Tasmania would be. If the league in Tassie receives enough support, then I think it would show that Tassie is ready for an AFL team.

And, as you said, the Devils weren't even competitive in VFL!

  6. I think it would be good to raise the popularity of footy within Tasmania, and if Tasmania get an AFL club in years to come the league will be a key place for afl players to be bred & rise up to be amazing players.
