Love Philosophy, would an undergrad degree in it - given I fill out the application to a T- allow me to be accepted into a state school if I hit the grades? They look for diversity, right?

  1. MBA programs prefer students with degrees in fields other than business. If you have good grades and a good GMAT score you should be able to get admitted to a large number of MBA programs. However, most MBA programs want students who have 2-3 years of work experience, although many accept students directly out of college and some are designed specifically for students with little or no work experience.

The MBA degree is a general management degree training you for managing any area of an organization. Your philosophy background can serve you will as a manager, and the MBA program will provide the necessary training in finance, accounting, marketing, economics, management and other business disciplines. Many MBA programs also offer concentrations in the second year of the program, which typically consists of 2-4 more courses in a specific field such as finance, marketing, or more exotic fields such as sport management, health management, aviation management, leadership, hospitality, human resource management, real estate, insurance, etc.

You should use the Official MBA Guide to locate MBA programs that best fit your needs, preferences, and criteria. It is a free service which enables you to get a list of programs ranked according to how well they satisfy the criteria you specify. You can then examine the details of each program, access their web sites, email them, and even send a pre-application form to them.

  2. While philosophy is an excellent discipline, you need to concentrate in a specific area. Philosophy can be a very broad field of study, and most companies are looking for specifics.

  3. Philosophy is an excellent disipline for any profession or academic goal. Through philosophy, one can learn reason, logic, ethics, and more. If you are going into business or law in particular, philosophy would be an excellent discipline.

    Good luck!
