Question:

What do you think of a double-major in Japanese and Graphic Design?

Hey! I'm a prospective college student thinking seriously of double-majoring in Japanese and Graphic Design/Web Design. Does that sound like a good combo? I'm planning to move to Japan one day, and so I'd like to have something to work with. How does a double-major concerning those two sound? Do you think it will be too much work? Or do you think it's just right? Will I have a good career if I am a graphic designer?

Thanks in advance for the opinions. ^^

  1. I think that sounds wonderful!

  2. If you want to be a graphic designer in Japan, then obviously that's a great choice.  Just know going in that double majoring in anything is never easy, especially if you're planning to graduate in four years.  You'll be taking some heavily loaded semesters to meet your program requirements on time.

If you're only studying Japanese to learn the language, though, you might want to consider minoring in it, instead.

  3. if it is your plan/goal to move to japan, and you like design, then yeah, i think it's a great idea. but it also depends on the college/program you're going into as to if it will be possible on your account. it may take you longer than 4-5 years.

the design college i go to has a co-op program where we have to intern/co-op 5-6 quarters in the last 3 1/2 years of our degree (we're on quarters, not semesters). it's a 5 year program overall. so for 5 to 6 of those quarters, we're out in the real world working (we alternate, one quarter we go to school, the next we co-op, then back to school, etc). but language classes are usually in sequential order. so for me, i want to take italian, but since i'm always working during winter quarter (january through march) i always have to miss that second class, and i can't take the 3rd in that level until i take the 2nd.

so you have to talk to your advisors and look at when your classes are going to be.

    good luck!

  4. Sounds like a cool major to me. :) It makes sense if you're going to Japan one day, and there are plenty of jobs in advertising, web design, art, etc. for the anime/manga people, businesses, and all sorts of stuff.

    Best of luck to you.
