My boyfriend and I are going to look at rings in a few months. Since we are both teachers, we don't have a lot of money. And I don't see the big craze about diamonds anyways, I really want to try on some rings that have birthstones in them.

What do you think of engagement rings that have stones other than diamonds as the main stone?

And what do you think the prettiest stone is?

  1. I think a diamond center stone with other stones like sapphires as side stones is beautiful.  I think an engagement ring without a diamond is fine but may be seen as just a ring.

  2. It will never be "looked upon" by others as an

engagement ring.  But as long as you and him

are happy with it ~don't worry what others think!

    Aquamarine is very pretty

  3. I think it's great! The whole diamond thing IS overdone.

As long as it means something to you guys, then it doesn't matter if you bought then out of a ring dispenser at WalMart.

I personally always have wanted rubies in my engagement ring... of course, those are expensive, too, but just an example...

    Good luck!

  4. OMG I loooooooooooooooooooove the idea of a pearl ring.  I dont have one though.  I thought about it after the fact.  I did however tell my husband that if he gets me another set when we get older I would like it to be pearl.

    I love these

But honestly any ring will do as long as you like it

  5. My engagement ring is white gold / blue topaz, I love it. I don't wear diamonds.

  6. i asked this exact question myself, if you want to search for my answers too but i'm sure you'll get plenty...

i personally love the idea.  i would rather see something with meaning and sentimental value than a diamond just because that's the "tradition"

you will i'm sure have girls/family/whoever "judging" why you don't have a diamond.

but it's your ring! make it what youw ant it to be!!!

  7. My "real" engagement ring was an opal with diamond accents.. when he was actually ready for me to start planning he gave me his mom's wedding set ( she had passed away a few years before we were married)

  8. Its honestly up to you. Many people never even had wedding rings but they were still in LOVE. That's what weddings are about. When you look at your ring it should be a reminder of the person you love. Who cares about diamonds? What is his favorite color? If its Blue get Saphire with pearls or something. Dont worry about what other people think. Worry about what you will think when you look at it :)

  9. I think you should have any stone you want. Diamonds aren't, and weren't, always the gemstone of choice for engagement rings(engagement rings weren't always the thing either). I think any stone that you feel strongly about is the one you should have.

I personally love diamonds, but yellow, champagne, cognac, or coffee diamonds. My birthstones(for both my Western and Eastern zodiac signs) are any yellow or red stones, such as yellow diamonds, sapphires or topaz, and ruby or garnet. My wedding band is a 1 cttw yellow diamond eternity band, my engagement ring is an antique Victorian ring that I had set with a .25 ct cognac diamond surrounded by champagnes.

My eternity band cost $800. My e-ring was $27 for the setting(eBay), about $200 for labor(local jewelry repair) and less than $50 for the loose stones(eBay).

  10. i love the idea. You could look up the stone and find out what it's meaning is. I know that a sapphire is said to be a symbol of loyalty to God and loyalty to the person you love that is why it is commonly used as an engagement ring in Greece.
