What do you think of most backpacker hostels?

i have lived in backpacker hostels when travelling overseas and they are not fit even to house cattle. no smoke alarms, no emergency exists , people injecting drugs and drunks smashing bottles in the rooms.

why wont the tourism industry and governments look in to these hostels and name and shame them in public?

It varies from country to country. I was in some in Scandinavia and then one in Luxemburg that were fine, and actually a nice way to meet other travellers.

But there are some bad apples.  Hostellers can do their part by notifying Hosteling International so the bad ones can get slammed.
