This has been bothering me for a while, our parents are Irish and have given us traditional Irish names, but what do people REALLY think of them, do you percive them as nice or plain weird?

My brother is Seamus (pronunced SHAME-US)

Other brother is Remus (REAM-US)

And me, Aofie (Pronunced EFA- like Eva)

And our surnames is Sharkey!

Thanks guys!

  1. I think mine and my siblings are worse for those outside of Ireland...

    Me: Aoife

    Brother: Eoghan

    Sister: Aoibheann...the trickiest

Very annoying for the relatives in England when writing Christmas cards :)

  2. I'm guessing you guys live in the US. If so, it sounds like your parents immigrated here after all of you were were born or they just wanted names from home for their kids.

They are fine, just sound like names from another country--which they are!

  3. I think they are neat.  I had trouble pronouncing your name though.  If u live in the states i'm sure you've lived a life of people asking how your name is pronounced or they've butchered it completely!

  4. I think they are cool names, nice your parents stuck to heritage.

  5. i like them.

coincidentally seamus and remus are both used in harry potter lol.

i really like yours the best though.

  6. i liek your name. but idk about your brothers.

    well seamus... is okay.

  7. Hehe, in a book I read there was a criminal family called the Sharkeys.

It may be a common name in Ireland, since the book was set in Ireland.

I like the first 2-Remus isn't that hard to pronounce, Seamus isn't either, since a lot of people know that "sean" equals "shawn."

Your name is a little weird-but I like it. It's different.

  8. The only one I didn't know how to pronounce was your name. I know a guy named Seamus; it's easy to pronounce as it Remus.

  9. A little strange, if you lived in America.  In Ireland or in Europe I'm sure people could pronounce them fine.  But just looking at your name, I would have no idea how to say it!

    lol My name is Jessica.

Brother's names are Michael and Marcus.

Sister's names are Melanie and Mariah.

  10. Love Seamus and Aoife - if I knew my kids wouldn't have enough issues with Poish first names I'd use Aoife as a middle name in a heartbeat. I wouldn't use Remus, but it's nice.

  11. Too Sweet!

  12. I love them.

They're actually not all that difficult to pronounce.  Remus is very straightforward, and most educated people are familiar with how to pronounce Seamus.  The only one that might give people more trouble is Aofie, but it's easy enough to say once you know how it's pronounced (and it's extremely beautiful).

I'm very much in favor of uncommon names.  I must say, though, that Seamus Sharkey is a bit of a mouthful!

  13. I think it is cool you guys have Irish names because they aren't common and I don't hear them often at all.

  14. i don't like them very much

  15. i like those names their unique and one of a kind

  16. i like them ,there unique,be proud of you heritage,my baby's do soon, so now I'm going to look in irish names, and I'm black! you think it would matter, a pretty name is just pretty !

  17. I know how to pronounce all of them.

    They are nice names.

  18. Only Aofie is really unpronounceable to me.  They sound very Irish to me, but what that REALLY remind me of is Harry Potter (Seamus and Remus are two characters in the series)

  19. I like the name Seamus a lot.

Remus is also a name from Roman mythology.  I don't consider either of these hard to pronounce.

Your name, on the other hand, with its traditional Irish spelling, is hard to pronounce for those not familiar with Gaelic. I think it is very pretty, though.

I am also part Irish, so I might be a little biased, but I think you should be proud to have the name Aofie.

  20. I think they're nice names.  When I read the first two I thought of Harry Potter books right away.  :)

I never knew how to pronounce Aofie, I think it's very pretty, now that I know how to say it.

Your parents are proud of their heritage and wanted to pass it on to you kids, you should be proud that they wanted to show their nationality.

  21. Sea-mus not Shame-mus. Didn't you watch Back To The Future: Part III?

  22. Those would not be my first chose of names!!!

  23. I would know exactly how to pronounce all of them

    They're very nice.

Except I must say I hate the way your parents named the boys Seamus and Remus which kinda rhyme.

I loooove your name Aoife though.

  24. I think Remus has a pretty straight forward pronunciation. I think it's kind of a comical name.  Seamus and Aofie do not look like how they are pronounced at all. I do think Seamus is kind of a neat name but wouldn't name my child that  because most people in U.S. wouldn't pronounce it right. They definitely wouldn't get Aofie right, but I do like Eva.  It's starting to become more popular here.

  25. I love Irish names! High five to your parents!!

  26. I wouldn't have known how to pronounce yours, but I'm familiar with your brothers'.  But now that I know, I like how yours is pronounced and I love that your names reflect your heritage.  My name reflects mine and when I was young I used to dislike it.  Now I love that I'm not Ashley or Katie, though those are nice names.  I plan on naming my kids something that reflects my heritage.  You can always go with a nickname if the pronunciation problems get to you.

  27. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet in other words it not the name it is the person and your names are easy to pronounce and quite nice get used to who you are

  28. I have heard these names before.  They are nice names.

  29. I knew how to pronounce all of those names and I really like them all. Your siblings' names have meaning - feeling. Your parents wanted to keep it traditional, and they did a great job. :] Awesome surname, too, by the way!

  30. i really like them!!! been irish myself everyone has those names so i hear them everyday. Ur lucky u have such nice names. good luck x*x
