What do you think of "professional panhandlers"? Those are people who are not homeless or destitue asking for money on the streets as a living basically. Oddly enough, writer Arthur Conan Doyle wrote "professional panhandlers" more than 100 years ago in one of his Sherlock Holmes short stores called The Man With The Twisted Lip. It's been going on for that long.

Here's a news report out of Salt Lake City Utah about a professional:

You can see it two ways , I believe. (1) It's lazy, sad, and hurts the believablity of true people in need. (2) It's actually smart and crafty, because a professional panhandler can make twice the amount of money someone on minimum wage or even $10.00 an hour can make in a year.

Either option you choose, shows something wrong. Option one shows something wrong with the person lying for free donation money. And the second option shows how out-of-whack are wages and employers are in the USA.

  1. I never give money to anyone begging on the street or any place else. There are bums in Los Angeles that make $40.000 a year tax free.

  2. Bums. That's all I think of them. Just plain bums.

  3. There will always be people out there that want to take advantage of the generosity of others.

On the other hand, if people are willing to hand the money over, they probably deserve to lose it.

I don't think it's a sign of the economic situation in the USA, though. It's not like you can get rich this way.
