What do you think of shape shifting?

I am a shape shifter.

I have the ability to shift my shape from that of an athletic young man into the form of a middle aged couch potato.

The process of shape shifting took me many years, and I don't believe I can change back (at least the young part).

But I have photographic proof that this transmogrification took place and is real.

Ok, if I were an Alien Shape shifter.  I'd use my high tech mind to develop the Fiber Optic scuba suit.  A beautiful beaded dress from head to toe that looks like reflections of everything in their tiny gold laced pattern.  50% percent of the light immiters are for receiving information, and moving the image from front to back.  Where it is now an image transmitter.  I flash all of the light fron all locations to hide among the trees, and grass.  And if its really good enough to hide me in a tree.  Or hide me in a lit room on the second floor, you may only catch a glimps of my wonderings as I use this light to fool the human mind into thinking I'm not there...moving that picture on the wall with my ghostly hand.  OOOPS1 she saw me.  Hide.  Cat!  I am only a Cat playing with the wall paper.

As far as earth creatures, some animals have a tremendous capacity to change their shape or color to blend in with their surroundings. But this isn't "shape-shifting" in the supernatural sense. It's just natural adaptation.

Regarding aliens, who knows?  We know absolutely nothing about aliens, and we can't even prove they exist, though I tend to think they do somewhere in the universe. So right now, shape-shifting aliens is only conjecture.

Physical shape shifting is not real. The physcial body can not do it, I dont care if you claim you showed you friends online, its not real..not for the author for the kids i talk to .   Now astral shifting is real, smiles..

This comes under the Meta-Physical realm, which is not accepted as a pure science - If true - It's believed that Humans can do it -The 'HOW" is the curiosity, but so far the info gathered are mostly anecdotes of observers.

First, I think it would be a cool ability. It is an ability in many role playing games (dungeons & dragons, etc.)

FYI: for the other poster on Deep Space Nine his name is

        Odo (Rene Auberjonois).

Never having met an extraterrestial (alien) I have no idea what abilities they might possess.

I am not aware of any earth bound creature with this ability (although technically maybe the caterpillar if the shift only needs to be one way?)

However, I am aware of stories of Shamans doing this. For a time it was thought they believed the could actually do this (perhaps because people thought the drugs impaired their reasoning). Most researcher and anthropologist today  believe that Shamans were only talking about this ability while they were on Shamanic Journeys (in trance states).

I suspect this if where (or at least one source) the idea of humans shape shifting into animal got started.

The transformers can do it and they are alien robots.

I once watched a documentary on some sea creature that could immitate a bunch of other creatures and it could change its color and shape to mimick them. It could mimick crabs, octopuses, various fish.....Pretty neat thing. However, I was just kind of spacing out that night, and now I can't even tell you what it was now. Maybe someone else knows.

As others have pointed out many creatures have the ability to change somewhat but to actually shape shift into another creature altogether is a product of movies and the imagination.

Ever tried to pick up a hog-nosed snake and seen him change into a rattler?  He'll do the best acting job you can imagine and he'll have you reconsidering whether you want to pick him up.

A lot of animals, even birds and some insects do something similar when threatened.  They're able to create an illusion that's convincing enough for it to be a part of their behavior repertoire.

I don't know much about aliens, but I think shape-shifting might be carried further by some creatures than others, sometimes in ways we haven't recognized.

I know a 2 people that shape shift and I have seen them do it. I used to have a cat that could, too. She wasn't really a cat, just in a cats body.
