Question:

What do you think of starting a "Draft Romney for Vice President" site?

Seriously.

I've seen lots of posts from people who wanted to vote for Romney, but now are voting for Huckabee, Paul, Obama, and even Clinton. Anyone but McCain, in other words.

I've also seen the election results from states that have held nominating contests After Romney suspended his campaign, and he's still receiving massive amounts of votes; 17% in Washington State.

Conservatives love him. Lots of people want him to run in 2012. Obviously, a run in four years would be strengthened by a few years experience in the White House. Also, it might take a few million people saying "I won't vote for John McCain unless Romney's on the ticket" to actually get McCain to bury his pride.

How many people would like to see a site like that? Who knows how to set one up?

  1. Great idea!  I know how to setup a website.  Contact me on Yahoo IM (userdimensions) to talk about.

Funny thing is, I just sent out the following email to my friends talking about this:

John McCain's dilemma - Republicans intending to vote Democrat in a Carter/Reagan repeat attempt

Mike Huckabee doesn't have a prayer of getting the republican nomination, but I think one of the reasons he stayed in the race was to prevent Mitt Romney from getting the nomination by pulling some of the conservative votes from him.  Mike Huckabee has, on many occasions, shown through his comments that he follows in the ranks of anti-Mormon evangelicals who unjustifiably fear that a Mormon in the White House would try to take over the world, or (worse yet) convert millions to a religion many evangelicals classify, lacking personal individual research, as non-Christian and a cult.

It appears, from the Super Tuesday votes, that about 60%-70% of the republican voters want a conservative republican.  If Huckabee hadn't still been in the race I think that Romney would have won Super Tuesday, but he didn't, and Mitt Romney has now dropped out.  Many voters don't see the Reagan conservative they're looking for in Mike Huckabee and they don't like John McCain's strong liberal streak, so a grass roots campaign has started with mass congregations of Republicans committing they'd rather vote for a Democrat than vote for John McCain.

Their reason for doing so has a twisted, but eerily convincing, logic to it.  They think that John McCain, with his liberal streak, would make a number of liberal-oriented mistakes as a president.  These people reason that they'd rather have a large number of liberal mistakes made by a Democratic president, and have the resulting failure correctly labeled and connected with the Democratic party, than have a few liberal mistakes made by a president wearing the Republican mantel and tarnish the Republican party.  If a Democratic President were elected, then people would vote the following election for a strong Reagan-conservative Republican president.  In this they are hoping to repeat the Carter-Reagan history where Democratic President Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, beating Republican contender Ronald Reagan, followed in 4 years by Ronald Reagan elected president for 2 terms.

Outside of this ever-growing group, there are also people who have decided to pencil in Mitt Romney's name, effectively throwing away their vote, or just sitting the whole election out and not voting.

Why McCain now needs to get elected

But this is exactly what Mitt Romney was trying to prevent when he suspended his campaign.  This time is different than when Jimmy Carter was running for president, because we are a nation at war and there is more at stake than just our domestic concerns.  Both Democratic candidates have told us that they intend to withdrawal from Iraq immediately, regardless of Iraq's capacity to defend itself.  If Iraq falls to radical Islamic Jihadists, who find all forms of democracy blasphemous; these terrorists would find a safe haven and stronghold in Iraq many times greater than Afghanistan was.  Combine this with Iran's newly acquired nuclear abilities; they could launch attacks that would make 9-11 look mild in comparison.  This could all happen in less than 4 years.

If a Democrat gets elected, there may not be much to salvage in 4 years.  Millions of lives may be lost in Iraq and untold here in America, and our economy, under a socialistic rule, would be even weaker than it is now, leaving us with less economic power to deal with terrorists militarily.  We can't wait 4 years to have a republican in the office - so John McCain, the very likely winner of the Republican nomination, has to win the national presidential vote.

To do this, John McCain will need to overcome the millions who threaten either not vote at all, or dissent to the Democrats on election day.  Since most of this is a result of voter disillusionment, having not obtained a Reagan-conservative, John McCain needs to act to regain their vote.  If John McCain declares a Reagan-conservative as a vice-president this would secure most of those votes.

How McCain can get elected (Why McCain should name Mitt Romney as vice president; and why he should do so right now)

1: Romney has a lot of support, which would mean votes for McCain

Romney had more support than Huckabee (about twice the number of votes).  Romney's votes would help McCain in the election.

    2: Romney is a Reagan-Conservative

Although he used to be a slightly liberal Republican, he had a political awakening 5 years ago, and has since been a strong conservative republican, never turning back since.  Ronald Reagan, once following in the ranks of Democrats, had a similar awakening that also made him a strong conservative republican.  Some people, aparently not aware of Reagan's own conversion, have attempted to label Romney's conservative awakening 5 years ago as "flip-flop"-ing.  I, like millions of other Americans, see Mitt Romney as a "Reagan conservative".  Having him running for president has whet American's desire to have another Reagan conservative president.  Like millions of others, we became excited about the possibility of this actually happening.

Mitt Romney is considered by most to be more of a Reagan-republican than Huckabee, so he would be the best choice for this Vice President position.

3: Romney completes McCain by filling in McCain's weaknesses

Also, McCain is, as he himself admitted, weak when it comes to domestic and economic issues.  These just happen to be Romney's strengths.

Unlike during the great depression, where the World War was attributed to having helped save our economy, the rules of the game have changed, and the war has not, nor will it, save our economy.  Our economy would need to be saved in a separate effort from the war.  We would be fighting the war on one front while simultaneously fighting for our economy on the other front.

If the economy were allowed to fail in the next 4 years, then it would be hard to continue the war efforts.  A strong military needs a strong economy, and a strong economy needs Mitt Romney.

Fears that McCain won't act, or won't act fast enough

Since this anti-McCain movement is growing and gaining in momentum, McCain would need to act immediately and announce Mitt Romney as the vice president now, before this grass roots campaign gets even more out of control.  Despite the bad blood between the 2 candidates, if they could put that aside and work together for the sake of America, they would become a formidable team and also incur the votes needed to win the election.

My only concern is that McCain's pride and disdain for Mitt Romney will cause him to either delay the vice-presidential announcement or not choose Mitt Romney at all.

I know that McCain and Romney both love this country.  I hope that McCain's love for this country is more powerful than his pride and dislike towards Romney.  America needs their combined strength for what lies ahead.

    I'm not alone

The thing I find interesting is that as I've been writing this, I've received emails and articles noting this very thing I'm talking about.  I'm not the first to connect the dots and make this assessment and suggest this solution.  Apparently, many people have been coming to this same conclusion.  I just hope McCain is one of them, and if not then hopefully someone close to him is inspiring him to come to this same conclusion - for the sake of America.

  2. I think it is a waste of your time.  The candidate who wins the primary has the option of choosing his running mate and does not really care what we think.

  3. Romney might be picked by McCain as running mate due to his early surrender in the Republican nomination.

  4. I would rather see Romney file as an Independent and run for president; McCain and Juckabee can destroy each other in the primaries and Romney can get elected by  general election votes from democrats, republicans and independents.

  5. Go for it!!!  I'm hearing a similar call from everyone I know.  I just got a call from a huge Romney supporter that wants to make this a national call for conservatives.  Draft Romney to VP!
