Question:

What do you think of the Demons being Heritage Listed?

In order to preserve the club who are in debt and sitting on the bottom of the ladder, they are proposing the club be heritage listed to save them (since they are the longest running footy club).

So can the Kangas do the same?

  1. suppose because their name is Melbourne and are the longest running club. [ Collingwood supporter ]

  2. I like Melbourne as a team and after all Melbourne is the home of Aussie rules so there has to be a team bearing their name in the competition so thats one team they should always hang on to.

  3. I think Romper says it all, the biggest con will be the loss of accountability needed to be shown by the board members..

but my heart goes with cute mum... Save your club by wateva measures you can.. tank, heritage listing, beg steal or borrow.. do it for the supporters, do it for the game!

  4. Clubs like Melbourne, kangas, Fitzroy all helped build the MCG the vfl and AFL

so some concessions must be made

on the other hand these clubs must perform and attract members

if they get listed it wont matter how well or not they going

    so NO to heritage list

Unfortunately the game is now a business and Melbourne will have to merge relocate or fold

I dont want them to go

  5. What do i think?   It's a cop out for bad management skills,  if this goes ahead they will be around for ever, so they should be, but it means their board, players, staff etc will have no accountability whatsoever.

They were one of the most successful clubs in the 50's, 60's,   they should of had a legacy of thousands upon thousands of supporters but they don't,  they are and have been for years poorly managed.  I dislike some Melbourne teams but look at Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond,  they are all well supported clubs but are always trying to keep building their numbers one way or another. Melbourne dropped the ball in that dept, we haven't won a flag for 28 years but still most people know a few tiger supporters why,  because it is passed down passionately by family members and friends,  melb supporters rather go to the snow than  worry about building that same passion to family members etc,   of course there are exceptions but generally the 4 clubs i mentioned have the huge support they do because of passion.

    [ Richmond supporter, lol ]

  6. It all sounds like rubbish to me

  7. A pity they could not have done something like that for Fitzroy a few years back.

113 years of football history gone forever when they made them merge.

    South Melbourne were another one

I bet they wouldn't let that happen to clubs like Geelong, Collingwood, Richmond, etc.

  8. I'm a dees supporter... and so I guess I would welcome ANYTHING that would save the club........

I'm a traditionalist .. and I remember in the late 80's  when The tigers were struggling , I donated money to save them .. and would do so for any other Victorian team ( except Carlton .. SORRY) ....

just want to say WOW and thank-you to those who aren't dees supporters but who would agree to them being Heritaged listed... especially the Pies supporters ( and so many other supporters put you guys down .. NOT ME BTW)

  9. Well, I suppose Melbourne have more of a case than the Roos, since they are named after the city, and they are the oldest team in the comp. The Roos didn't join until later on. I think if Melbourne gets heritage listed, all old clubs should be, regardless of if they are wealthy or not.

japanesemaggie: Haven't they changed back to North Melbourne Kangaroos since Brayshaw took over?

  10. The are nomads. No club base of operation (Junction Oval, how funny), the club is basically controlled by MCC members (if they show up to the MCG on match day). Melbourne is the oldest club, but that doesn't entitle them to anything in my opinion.

  11. Yeah why not? lol

They should do all they can to save themselves.

    No harm in trying.

  12. Funny you should also mention the "Kangas". if it were still the North Melbourne FC then I guess a similar argument could be raised but it isn't. To have no Melbourne FC in Melbourne would be a tragedy but they have to rebuild both onfield and off field and need a home base. But national heritage ridiculous! The AFL should plow more money into the D's to keep them rather trying for a west sydney team. I seriously wonder if any AFL board member has ever spent time there but they are born and bread NRL people and that will never change.

  13. I don't know about the heritage listing, however, Melbourne just seemed to lose its way, as a footy Club when Ron Barassi left to coach Carlton in 1965.    Melbourne dominated the VFL comp in the 50's and early 60's and were the sole MCG occupant, playing their home games their, and really,  it actually looked odd, to see players who called the old suburban grounds home, like Sth Melb, St Kilda, Hawthorn, Fitzroy, Footscray, etc, etc  playing centre stage at this elite ground, the worlds greatest stadium, in their 'ONE' away game for the season .

The biggest  season excitement for these fans, was to check the draw, to see when their  team were to play  Melbourne, because it was the only week during the season when everyone in family, was guaranteed a 'seat' at the footy at an 'away' game.   For many Collingwood fans Queens birthday weekend was like Christmas, reli's statewide turned up for the Clubs biggest game of the year at the G.    In 1965 when Richmond became an MCG co tennant,  later winning Flags in '67 and '69,  supporters from the suburban clubs, were fortunate then, to visit the G  for two away games, and this really, was when the mustique of Melbourne without Ron Barassi basically evaporated, and if thats now heritage, so be it !

  14. I reckon Melbourne should be entitled to this, they are afterall the oldest club and I am not a Melbourne supporter I go for Geelong!!Go Cats!!

  15. Personally, I think they should. What's happening at that club is really unfortunate. [Pies supporter too]
