What do you think of the DPM offered by University of Florida? If you work in the industry, would you think a DPM would be worth hiring?

  1. Interesting,  I'll check out their website.

I assume you already or soon will have your B.S. degree.

And now thinking of going to school there for your Ph.D./M.D.?

I think a person would be worth hiring.

    Pharmacies, drug companies, ag-biotech companies.

Find out what corporations are involved in the program.

Companies like Dow Lilly, Monsanto and others might be donating or offering grant money to the program.

Some of the company's scientists might have been given adjunct professorships by the universities.

Some students may have the option of doing their research internships at the company.

A great advantage when wanting a job from them 2-4 years later.

I would talk to the professors in the department

    And the industry scientists.

Most are pretty good at giving advise to students.

    More comments, FYI:

Many drugs came (and still come) from (botanical) plant sources.

The American Indians and native people around the world used these medicines.

Another reason many people want to save tropical rain forests.

Funny thing, I remember using the key word "plant" when doing literature searches.

I would also get info on chemical plants,

but "plant" as in the large factories (e.g. power plant) that make things.

Universities in the U.S. have been studying and utilizing plant drugs and novel compounds for a century.

    In more recent times,

anti-cancer drugs (e.g. yew tree, periwinkle).

    genetically engineered plants,

e.g. enhanced levels of the drugs, human antibodies.

The university scientists studying them can be in a number of departments.

Plant science departments (e.g. Horticulture, Biochemistry, Plant Physiology)

    Chemistry

    Pharmacy

    Medicine

U of F likely formed this Program in order to bring everybody closer together.

Better for recuiting new professors, students, corporate sponsors, $.

The distribution of $ between the various scientists is easier.

If you are a student, and like this field, you can take the classes you like and need.

Years ago, a student would need to double major

or venture out of his major to take a few classes,

    sometimes this would create problems.

    Good Luck!

  3. A doctorate is a serious commitment, unless you are 100% sure yourself you want to do it you may need to re-evaluate your choice.
