The Women's Media Center created a video titled "Sexism Might Sell, But I'm Not Buying It!" and a campaign to do something about the pervasive sexism in the media:

Here's the statement about the video by Carol Jenkins, president of The Women’s Media Center (a nonpartisan 501(c)3 organization):

“We know that media companies today are under tremendous pressure to build audiences and drive ratings, but this type of vulgar, sexist commentary is not the way to do it. Women wield tremendous financial power in the United States. Our message to media companies: if you think that sexism sells, think again, because women in America are not buying it."

What do you think of the video? Do the jokes by media commmentators and the press about a woman’s appearance to specific gendered insults educate or upset you?

  1. h**l, I wish women would talk about men like that. Get over it babes. It's not a crisis, and don't elevate it to one. You can't reform male biology. The only thing these men were guilty of was speaking what was on their mind. Trust me, your husband or boyfriend thinks the same thing, he just doesn't trust you enough to tell you about it.

  2. I admit I saw only the first min of the video.

You look great, she looks great, everybody looks great.

If you take offense by that you have problems the girls who did that clip have problems.

What is it ? What did you say ? The moderator isnt talking serious politics ? Well you should have worried about THAT long ago when America started to tune out everything that is "too serious" and doesnt have a certain degree of comedic relief (well not only america happens all over the world).

  3. I was enraged by the video - it was well put together and hits all the points perfectly. I do not see this in UK media - some of those comments are truly disgusting and those people are consummate unprofessionals for making them.

I am glad I do not have to see this kind of thing in my news. We had a woman PM 30 years ago - we are over it, clearly the US is not.

  4. What you feminist gals never seem to grasp is by forming 'women's groups', YOU are being sexist immediately! Can anyone say hypocrite?

(I couldn't be bothered watching the vids by the way, but I know for a fact if its a bunch of women trying to be funny, they won't be! Woops! I'm for it now!! lol)

  5. If you are not buying it, then why are you promoting it by showing links?

  6. I've seen this video and was outraged by it (the media). Lots of women have finally seen how sexist the media can be with the recent campaign and this well-put-together video.

No one can say it's a "myth" - the proof is in the clips.

Our media is sexist. No big surprise there for many of us. The thing to do now is to ask ourselves, how can  we make it better? WE MUST think of our children, grandchildren and how we can get rid of archeic concepts like sexism and racism.

-Putting more women in the media is one solution.

-Educating society about women's value is another --- we must be valued and respected.  If society doenst value and respect us, how can we value ourselves????

  7. It was more of a highlight reel of sexism than truly showing how much sexism is in the media. I mean there were only what 4 shows in the clip, right?

People spend too much hating on each other and then complaining about it afterwards. We all do it. Women hate on women. Women hate on men. Men hate on women and men hate on men.

We all have a lot more in common than we think. I've been talking with some of the GWS regulars in a chat for awhile now. We have traditionalist, feminist, equalists, christians, athiests, pagans, etc. We all come from different backgrounds and parts of the world. We have all lead different lives and experienced different things. On the outside we really don't seem to have anything in common but once we started chatting we realized we all have a lot in common with each other and in general we like each other very much.

While this video makes a good point, it's not going to change the world. Open and respectful dialogue between people will. We need to break down the communication walls between us and step onto some solid and common ground. Then and only then will we be able to change things for the better.
