Question:

What do you think of the cost cutting rules in F1 and the limitations it sets to the designers?

Especially engine performance.

It puts me off somewhat that engineers have their hands tied behind their backs and can't do squat to extract much more performance out of their engines.

One of the beauties of F1 is that there are different constructors in it producing their own car.

If they all end up performing the same under different colors isn't F1 shooting itself in the foot with such rules?

  1. Formula one....the Pinnacle of Motor Sports.....Indeed a Dangerous and Fatal one....As seen two to thre decade ago.....Cars having V12>V10>V8.....Have made their journey in Formula one.....There was Turbo(I love the Noise..lol)...There were Complete Slicks Tyre's....now by mentioning all those i mean that a V10 Engine is a V10 which means offallot of Power...the Car which Aryton Senna Drove was very powerful(TO MENTION WITH NO TRACTION OR SAFETY) i am not very sure with the Traction Control thing But sure that they did not have Any Safety measure......Which by the way lead to the Accident.....A horrible one.....:-(......A Loss of this standard was indeed inacceptable......the first thing which came to the mind of the Stewards was the Safety Measures....Imprving them....Lack of Technology.....and here we go they Snatch away all the Good things in F1...the Engine Capacity...Turbo...and every thing i hav not written right here...Now think of the Crash of Robert Kubice in the BMW in the Canadian GP...last year.......It was a horrible Accident......I am not sure but the speeds of both Aryton Senna and Robert Kubica were approximately equal.......But at the end of the Day TECHNOLOGY Saved our Driver Kubica.........

My Point Clear.....No technology No Fun.........So Good news for You now........By my Knowledge.....Turbo, Complete Slicks Are Comming Back to F1........Check out the Formual one Official site www.Formula1.com.....At least i have seen that Complete Slicks are comming back in 2008.....Not soo sure about Turbo.....

And your point is right.......Engine performance is crucial......As i told You the FIA Seems to see the Safety before Racing.......Indeed they are Right in that.......Atleast if they are Returning what they Snatched away from Us, In the Name of Driver Safety.....

After we get what they promised to return(Turbo, Beggier Engines, Slicks)....Formula one  will return to its Original Nature...

                                              Competitive RACING!!!!!

  2. i dont like the open consumer car rule, b/c its a joke, and if every team starts going out buying parts from a diff team then the sport is no longer the same, b/c the whole point of f1 is outdoing the others w/ what you made, as opposed to theirs. i dont like that rule at all, when i first heard about it being discussed i thought hmm, might as well say goodbye to watching the sport.

  3. I have to disagree, they are already far enough from each other. It's boring to see the same team winning all the time. I would prefer them to use outdated cars and provide closer racing than see them having the best cars in the world with every team being 5 seconds per lap away from each other.

EDIT: I think it's coming back to the good old days. Racing was closer then and there was more overtaking. There will always be dominant teams but at least we will see less Noah's Ark grids with groups of 2 drivers of the same team in every qualifying session. I like the fact that they are trying to use biofuels and less aero. I think the whole engine efficiency is a challenging goal. It's not that they are not doing any progress, it's just that they have a bigger challenge. They have to work on engine efficiency, which makes it a lot more relevant to car technology than in the previous years. If Mosley leaves, I hope the direction doesn't change.

EDIT2: Also, back in the day they didn't need engine or car homologation rules simply because teams would naturally run the same car for 2 or 3 years. You would see cars like the mp4 2 run for 3 years with only minor changes, a, b and c versions. Now they use 3 wind tunnels running 24/7, back then I think they would use 1 and probably not 24/7. I think they are taking it all back to the golden age, I dont see why stopping them from overspending will make it bad, after all it was cool back in the day why wouldnt it be cool now. And it was still the pinacle of motorsport without it being as expensive as it is now.

EDIT3: Hmm it sounds like you know about engines more than I do so I won't refute that. But I still think that the problem is that their updates have become to frequent and in order to bring it back to what it was they need to homologate, force them to stick to one design for at least 2 years like they used to do, instead of updating their stuff practically every race.

What's good about this is that we will see every team  havng an equal chance. Teams that dont have a lot of money might now be able to manage their budget better and have a realistic chance to be competitive. And we may see more teams coming to F1 if its not too expensive.

  4. Rule changes for safety's sake. Rule changes for competition's sake. All well and good.

Rule changes to reduce cost. Futile. You can not stop teams from spending the money that they deem necessary to gain an advantage. Freeze the engines, and they will focus those funds on Aero, or suspension....etc.

I agree with you. Let the teams develop technology. Otherwise, this turns into NASCAR. Ewww.

  5. Cost cutting, safety and trying to make cars environmentally friendly all compromise the potential for development of the cars.  They should focus on making the cars as good as possible and not worry about these things so much.
