  1. Cost of Living

No, we don't pay $3.00 for a loaf of bread in Northern Alberta! In fact, the price of bread and many other staples is comparable to the cost you'd expect in one of Canada's larger centres.

Typically, larger communities can offer better selection and lower prices. But don't disregard the small businesses. Many local business owners are keen on ensuring you shop close to home and work at making their prices competitive.

The cost of living in Northern Alberta is surprisingly agreeable. Our rates for natural gas, electric power, telephone and Internet service are very competitive with other regions in Alberta. One of our little known secrets is that recreational costs are often more affordable than in Canada's cities.

  2. In most of Alberta the cost of living  is the same as, or less than, most other places in the country.  Taxation is less, so that makes a big difference.  The big issue in some parts of Alberta is the cost of housing.  For example in Fort McMurray in the north a single wide mobile home trailer sells for as much as $400,000 - yes, that is the correct number of zeros.  However, housing in most of alberta is less than in Toronto and Vancouver for example.  Fort McMurray and  a few other northern towns are a bit of an exception.  The cost of food, utilities, schools, etc. are certainly comparable to elsewhere.  In terms of transportation remember that distances can be quite huge, so the cost reflects the distance.  Air transportation in Canada generally tends to be expensive, but most of us who travel frequently by air are accustomed to that, and we learn to look for seat sales.  I think that overall the cost of living in Alberta would be certainly comparable to most other places in Canada.

  3. Calgary and area are expensive right now.   Food prices, school fees are the same as elsewhere.

Housing prices are the major expense.   Whether you rent or buy it's pricey.    Gas is expensive as well which really bugs me since it's our gas...
