Gervaise is my French grandmothers name. She got it from an Irish woman her mother met on a cruise ship. I kind of like it .What do you think?

  1. i need 2 know how to pronounce it?

  2. Pronounced how?

the story is pretty.. but being from America and never having taken a French class, I'd pronounce it Ger-vase.. which i'm sure is incorrect.

  3. How do you pronounce it?

  4. sounds pretty g*y

  5. I'm not crazy about it.

  6. Have known one Gervaise in my life - not very common, so good if you like unique names. People might have problems with spelling and pronunciation though, but much better than some of the outlandish names/spellings around at the moment!

Also, baby name sites do only show it as a boy's name (means something like spear warrior) but I doubt people would know this if you chose to use it for a girl :) The Gervaise I knew was a girl.

Edit: pronunciation = ger like german, vase like face :)

  7. Just by sight alone I can't figure out how to pronounce it.

  8. I'm not a big fan of it. It sounds like a last name. I have no clue why parents continue to give kids last names for their first name. If I ever had a kid, I'd name him Jim or Bob or Jimbob or Jimbobarooney, or J.B. or Jimmycrackcornandidontcare.

  9. the only person i know of with that name is garvaise, a man. but it could be a crossover gender name, its pretty...its not ugly. what could you use as a nickname?

  10. Yes it's a lovely name and I think there is a French saint called Gervaise. The name is Germanic in origin, meaning Spear Thrower.
