What do you think of the name Adonis?

for a boy

would you pronounce it a-done-is or a-don-is?

and do you think it's nice or would the boy get teased? named after supposedly the god of male beauty as in Venus and Adonis.

It makes me think of Adonis Cabarent, which is a male stripper club in Brighton, very cheesy and popular with hen parties!

Where I come from, Adonis is a term which is used to describe someone who thinks he is god's gift to women!

I think he'd get teased, anyway. It could easily be turned into "a dentist" and other such juvenile things that kids could think up.

I pronounce it Ah-doe-nis. The other way, Ah-don-is, reminds me too much of Madonna.

I used to like this name, too, but for whatever reason, I kind of turned on it, and am not fond of it anymore. I DO, however, like the feminine version, Adonia. Very pretty!

And I agree, Astrid is an awesome name, one of my favorites!

I'd think it would be pronounced A-don-is.  Yes I think he would get teased at school, but I dont have an unusual name and kids at school still managed to find a word that rhymed with my name to make fun, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.  People will get used to it and it's the person that makes the name not the other way round, but also remember he may get nicknamed something like 'Addy' or 'Don' or 'Donny' etc (but again all nice names).

Teased?:  No, I don't think so.  I think it's rare enough that it won't seem frilly.  He could also go by Don for short if, for some reason, he didn't like it.  (Also, most kids aren't going to even know who Adonis is)

Origin:  Not the god of male beauty.  He was, however, the most attractive male ever on earth (according to mythology).  Aphrodite, the goddess of love, had an affair with him, which is maybe where you're getting confused.  (I'd read more into the origin, btw.  Esp. who his parents were.  If you still like it, go ahead and use it.  It IS a nice name.)

Personal opinion:  I like the name, and was considering using it for a long time.  I just "fell" out of liking it, I guess.  I also met someone once named Adonis, and he was very unattractive.   That may be what kinda ruined it.  

Anyway, I say go for it if you really like it that much.  But like you said.  It the person that makes the name.  He'll be as attractive as your genes make him, not his name.

Generally I pronounce it a-DON-iss. I wouldn't call a child such a name; you're almost guaranteeing the poor thing will grow up hump-backed and squinty-eyed. Give him a name that's easier to live up to. ;)

adonis...? that's strange. there was a guy in my graduating class who's REAL name was tobius maximus. those are his first and middle names, and none of us knew it until gruaduation practice when his real name was called out. until then, he insisted that we all call him toby. my point is, don't give your child an old roman sounding name. it might be cute now but it could be embarrasing later!

I don't think he would get teased because he's named after Venus and Adonis, but he would get teased just because it's an odd name, no offence if you really like it, but he most likely will.
