What do you think of the name Temperance?

not that fond of it. i think. of the poor kid that would have a name like that. each and everytime they are going to have to spell it. and pronouns it there is a good chance the kid would end up with a nickname that couldnt be worst then that name. i just cant imagine.

I know what it means, but I always think of "temper" when I see the word. :)  Be careful what you wish for...

Anyway, I've never seen the word-name before.  Most of them I don't like, but this one I do for some reason.

I like it.  We all hear names such as Patience, Hope, Joy, Grace and on and on.  Temperance is a very important quality in character and with temperance exhibited in life great achievements can be accomplished.  It may be a name that overcomes words that others may speak such as lazy, bad temper, no self control and on and on.  She will see herself as having temperance because that is her name.  My daughter is named Grace and she acts and carries herself as if she is the next Miss America and she is only 7..its like she was born wearing high heels and acting lady like.  Not to say I don't have to train her in it but she seems to naturally exhibit the meaning of her name.

I don't like the name personally.  Going with a unique name isn't a bad idea, however that name sounds odd and is difficult.  How about this...name the child "Seven".

Sounds like the kid has a gypsy for a mother. Yeah sure, it has a nice, OK, meaning but I think parents are going to look at the child as though it has been playing with Tarot cards.

I think it's interesting, but I don't like it. It reminds me of tempur, the stuff they make mattresses out of. Also, I think that's a bit long for a young child to spell..just a thought.

Not really a big fan.  It makes you think of temper, like anger, which is a negative thing.  I know that's not what temperance really means (restraining yourself, self control, etc.) but to me the first thing I thought when I read the name was negativity.

It's so funny that this name means the exact opposite of what it sounds like to me. The name sounds very old-fashioned, like a name from the 1890s or something. It's not ugly or anything, but it just sounds like it belongs in the Prohibition Era or something.

The meaning of the word temperance is just not fitting for a child. I mean it's good that you want her to be modest and all, but having her name directly derived from modesty... not good.
