I think of it the same I think of the theory that 2008 is actually 1589.  or 612.  or 37579...

Actually, the numbering of years is fairly arbitrary. If we all went by the Runic (Viking) calendar, it would be 2258, while by the Muslim (Hijra) calendar it's 1429. It depends on the calendar used.

Time is a human construct.  We all agree that there are 24 hours in a day.  If one country decides to say that there are 25 hours in a day, we would not agree with them.

It doesn't matter what year it is.  The current calendar is based off of Jesus, whose birthday and death day are unknown to us.  What if we choose to adopt a calendar that goes off the last time the dinosaurs roamed the earth?  Or perhaps our best estimate of when the Big Bang occurred?  In other words, as long as humans come to an agreement, it can be any year we choose.

It's like the lunar calendar, which causes the Chinese new year to occur on different days each year.  We don't follow it, but some societies do.

In fact, if I became the ruler of the entire planet, I would declare that the year of my birth is year 1...and I'll squash you if you won't agree with me! Just kidding
