The chimps would have remembered the country.

The experiment did not suggest they were "smarter", it concluded they had a better and faster short term memory. This does not mean they have an ability to evaluate complex or abstract ideas.

From the depths of old working autism all of this "smart chimp " stuff makes perfect sense.

Old working autism the old autism you never hear about seems to be the living missing link in evolution and if we indeed have figured out the building blocks of mans mind those chimps were doing nothing more than "picture thinking"

Old autistic like me have discovered we are primary picture thinkers (lack of eye contact in modern autism) and once we learn the basic invisible to you autism thoughts much like the ones the chips were using (I seen the news clip on TV) we can build upon those and then do normal thoughts.

Someday If science could hook a monitor to our brain and see the slow motion step by step building process of a human thought they will see why  those chimps did so well but also glimpse the very core thoughts of mankind. I think many animals have mental abilities that are superior to some human abilities.  Where humans really shine is communications and logic.  I doubt any animal even comes close in those two critical, for humans, categories.
