  1. I've had both

Jets take less water, once you're up "on step" you can run them in 6 inches if you are nervy enough.

But jets are not as efficient as props.

An out board jet will take as much as 30% of your power and an inboard jet will use about 15-20% extra as opposed to a prop.

With the loss of power of course, you will be using more fuel witha jet.

Jets are safer, only in that a swimmer that gets run over is not as likely to get cut as a prop would be.

Just consider your inteneded usage, when i was running rivers a lot, jets were the only way to go.

Now that I am spending most of my time on lakes and deeper water, props are faster and use less fuel, not to mention cheaper to buy and maintain.

This may sound facetious but one of the reasons for the increase in popularity of jet boats is the name, jet boat sounds so much sexier and more appealing than conventional prop driven boat. On the dealer's floor jets have a huge advantage over props because the name sound fast and exotic.

  2. I live near a lot of lakes and the ocean, so boating is very popular here.  If you're talking about jet skis, yes they are very popular.  They're small, fast, and, less expensive than a prop boat.  Jet skis are also very noisy, ridden by people with varying levels of experience and have been banned from some of the lakes in Maine because of the noise they create.

Prop boats are more versatile, can carry groups, and handle a wider range of weather safely.  They can also be expensive to own and maintain.

  3. Hey,

well the main difference between the two as far as from the drivers seat is the maneuverability differences in the two.A prop driven boat can be steered at low speeds ie; docking whereas the boats with jet drive are a bit harder to steer in this situation because they  are steered by the jet outlet. In other words it has to be under considerable power to be steered. Now with that being said if your looking for fun only the jet boat with it's far superior handling at speed is a real blast to operate. They can usually be turned at full speed/throttle at almost 90 degrees. There are a lot of other differences that are pretty small to be considered and really I think the best advice is to go to a dealer that sells both and get there opinion on two comparable models (price) based on what your goals are for the vessel.
