I'm hoping to transfer to SMU in the next year or so. I was looking at their majors and I came upon this one. Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on this.

"Finance - Alternative Asset Management Specialization

NEW! Investments in alternative assets - including hedge funds, venture capital, private equity, real estate, and oil and gas - have increased dramatically in the past five years. The Alternative Asset Management specialization is part of the EnCap Investments and LCM Group Alternative Asset Management Center at SMUCox. Cox undergrads who are interested in alternative assets may apply for this specialization during their junior year. The program will include two specific courses in alternative assets and a summer internship."

  2. If it interests you, go for it. If you really want a career in finance, I would also suggest becoming good at analytical thinking and interviewing as soon as you can, since finance interviews aren’t easy.

Also, (depending on what kind of finance you want to do) consider taking the CFA Level 1 exam, even though it's a graduate-level program. (You have to be in your senior year to register to take the exam, but you can't progress to Levels 2 and 3 until you receive your bachelor's degree.) Your resume will definitely stand out. Level 1 isn't too difficult, but many, many people fail because they are working professionals and don’t have time to study. Using your college years to study for this exam would make your life easier in the long run.

  3. SMU is a good school....fellow Texan here with a BBA in HR from Baylor.  I think this sounds like a very interesting degree.  Yes, finance can offer higher paying jobs, but financial planners seem to be a dime a dozen these days. So this degree sounds lucrative and different especially the part about oil and gas...there will be a lot of business behind how we change our dependence on foreign oil and to create better fuel options.  Go for it.

  4. Finance is a GREAT degree. It has some of the highest paying jobs and many job opportunties.Although, some jobs have been cut since the economy has been going down.Accounting is a good degree too.Finance & Accounting share a lot of the same courses so you could test both out and see which one you like the best.
