  1. I love historical geography. I took a few courses on it in university. The courses focused on travelers, surveyors, explorers, and scientific observers. They dealt a lot with early exploration, and first contact as well as historical cartography and how people used to view the world.  We looked at a lot of Aboriginal maps as well as ancient maps. I found the courses quite interesting.

    They were human geography courses.


  2. In my early years of school we studied a subject called "Social Studies". This was a combination of history and geography, much like what you are talking about.

    To me, settlement geography has to be done in an historical context and history of exploration and empire building has to be done in a geographical context. In many cases the two are inseparable. Hope you thesis is successful.
