Depends on how the area is set up.  Certain materials can absorb sound like quilts, rugs, pillows and heavy blankets.  Other materials like windows and hardwood floors can bounce sound around.  Maybe you could set up a bare spot in the basement with nothing but mikes and music equipment, and set the recording equipment outside the area.
