The Member of the Wedding
by
Carson McCullers
1946
The novella's protagonist is a sheltered 12-year-old girl named Frankie Addams with a spitfire persona. Her mother was tragically deceased while giving birth to her. It would be appropriate to conclude that her father is a remote, configuration of a human being. She has no friends as she is secluded from the world and lay in despair, desperate to grasp some form of connection to the world beyond her home premises. She frequently fantasizes about bypassing, what according to her, is a stifling ontic. She fantasizes of going away with her brother and his bride-to-be on their honeymoon and following them to the Alaskan wilderness. Her most contiguous comrades would be the family's black maid, Berenice Sadie Brown, and her six-year-old cousin, John Henry West. In this novella, Frankie Addams will face obstructions dealing with the topic of “life†but nonetheless, master the ability to cluster her double personalities, naive and stubborn, but willing and determined, so that by the end of this novella she will gather most of the idiosyncrasies that compose the sophisticated and impeccable young lady.
