This year in history it is required to research and make a history day project. The theme this year is The Individual In History:Actions & Legacies.

I'm almost decided on doing Desmond Doss , the only "concientious objector" to ever receive the medal of honor(world war 2).

What do you think ?Suggestions?

  1. I am sure no one else will pick this individual, and while he may not have made any major changes or contributions to history ( looking here at the big picture ) it is definitely a topic with a lot of historical significance.

Being a conscientious objector, in the opinion of many,  borders on mutiny and insubordination, a controversial subject to say the least.

Conscientious objectors have existed since the dawn of war and there should be plenty of information available for your research.World War One saw more than it's share of conscientious objectors, although at that time they were views as traitors, during this conflict France had large number of it's army refuse to fight in what was seen as mutiny. They simply walked away from the front.

In fact, I saw a program on T.V. some time back about a soldier who is a conscientious objector and currently refusing to serve in Iraq. With some research on him and others that have taken this stance, prior to and post WWII, you should be able to make a well rounded report on this subject while keeping the main focus of the report on Desmond Doss therefore showing your teacher that, while keeping your focus on an individual, you can also report on the history of the subject and the legacy that was created by Doss.

You have yourself a great topic indeed do enough research and your sure to get an A+, and while you seem to be on top of your chosen subject here are a number of links that should be helpful.

    Good Luck!

P.S. be sure to check your spelling : "Conscientious"  you don't want to mispell your subject!

  2. I like your pick - it is different, original, not the kind of thing there will be any others doing. So if you do a good job I would think you would receive a good grade.
