  1. I think that soon people will think that the UNoriginal spellings are ORIGINAL, so there really isn't much difference.

I know a lot of people who have just changed spellings or completely pulled a name out of the blue.

for example, a lady i know got the name 'Mercedes', which i know is already an unusual for the modern world, and spelt it 'Mersaydeez'. Parents worried that their kid might get mistaken for the car?

  2. It's ridiculous. Most of the ways these people spell it are completely ugly. I love traditional spelling (:

  3. What do you mean original spellings? Original spellings are better than the tryndeigh cr@p thats out there today.

  4. I think it is a stupid idea to change the spelling to be original.

  5. I'm not a fan of "original" spellings.

  6. I dont mind it to be honest. It just makes them more unique :]

  7. Having to spell your name to people is a pain. "that's G*E*A*I*N*Y*N*" they pause...Oh, you mean "Jane." It's lame.

  8. confused

  9. Completely silly! I think the trend has really come from an increasing amount of people with poor spelling or lack of education rather than being intentional. If the spelling has come from an original language source such as Keira (Irish) Caera (Gaelic) or Kira (Arabic) then I can understand choosing one of those, but to make up a phoenetic spelling because its cool..... just looks silly!

  10. i do not like it at ALL! it doesn't make a name original. it just make names difficult to pronounce and spell, and dooms the child to a lifetime of correcting people.

  11. It is completely unoriginal to have a creatively spelt name. Unless it is the phonetic spelling, I don't see the point in creative spellings.

It's not really a new trend either, especially if you have a look at naming data from the 1800's. Here are just some of the names: Josiephine, Nickolas, Julious, Loraine and Olevia. These spellings don't look so different from the ones I see on this baby name forum/category.

Indeed, there have been many different spellings for popular names of the past. While today we have Aiden, Aidan, Aedan, Aydin et al, back in 1900 there were 10 different spellings of the name Katherine. Here's the list: Catherine, Katherine, Kathryn, Catharine, Katharine, Katheryn, Cathrine, Cathryn, Kathrine, Kathryne.

There are huge drawbacks to creatively spelled names. Like you've already mentioned, people think that creative spellings are original when they aren't. You only need to spend 5 minutes in the baby name section of this site to discover just how many expectant parents want a 'unique', creative name. Funnily enough, these names almost always sound the same, as they're usually rhyming variants of the names Aidan, Aylin and Miley. Or popular names missing the first letter (e.g. Madison to Addison).

My main gripe with creatively spelled names is that they're so hard to decipher. I mean, how am I supposed to correctly pronounce a name like Kaeliegh? The poor kid would have to constantly correct people on the spelling of their name.

  12. I think it's acceptable to a point, but a lot of people are taking it way too far.

  13. I like it! People can at last be individual!

  14. Not a bad idea as such.

  15. it makes it tough if you ever want to buy them anything personalized at disney world, but other than that its good to be different

  16. I like it....

    Courtney-Kortney

    Chloe-Khloe

    Jenny-Ginny

    Abby-Abbey

and those are anly a few names that can be original :)
