I'm black, and in my fourth year of college. The university I attend is predominately white. When I first started, I noticed some of the white, suburb students were kind of rude to mean. Even though I'd try to help them with the work b/c I had some AP courses in high school they wouldn't listen to me. One guy even said, "she doesn't know what the f*ck she's talking about." When I said, "Excuse me, " he said he didn't say anything. It turned out I was corrrect. I used to spend a lot of night crying thinking I couldn't make it in a "white man's world". I rarely talk in school now. In all honesty, I feel that I've gotten dumber over the years.

The black students were just as odd. I noticed that a lot of them perpetuated sterotypes by being loud & ghetto. Also, some would come late to class everyday. I found I had no where to fit in.

Now, that I'm in my fourth year. I don't notice much of this anymore. The black students are more professional & the white students even approach me & talk to me & we ask each other questions to get through school. I think most of them have been weeded out.

  1. maybe in the beginning you were really self-conscious and insecure so you tend to be more sensitive of and focused on the bad things that happened. also maybe everyone has matured and now treat each other with respect. this also would affect the way they carry themselves and they are now a lot more well-mannered

  2. why r u thinking which has already happened long back, time is running out with lot of things happening out around do, black or white doesnt matter, help others when u got time/interest, else do ur own works , dont waste time, alteast roam onthe roads alone.

  3. You answered your own question, they have indeed been weeded out.

Also at that age people are trying to see where they fit in the social ladder so they tend to try anything from being aggressive to almost a recluse. Personally I have noticed that all of the bullies from my school days ( i'm now 36) have not done well in life. While I was never a model student I have a comfortable life and a good social life with very good friends.

You are who you are. It sounds like you are one of the worlds nice people!

Carry on as you are and you will turn out just fine.

  4. Sounds to me like they have all just grown up a bit.

  5. I think being a minority student would help to push you to be a better person.  I was always the fat guy in school.  I would let the rude comments slide off my back.  Once people realized that I was a human being, they became more open and friendly.  Good luck.
