Question:

What do you think of this person's language?

there's this guy I know uses these big words all the time. Some specific examples are

"interesting how you call us lazy as you ensconce yourself in bed"

"sorry I had to curtail our last conversation, because of..."

"this sentence right here might be superfluous to your report..."

Sometimes it sounds like he's trying, other times it sounds a little forced. He's 21, I'm 19... Some guys make fun of him, and call him a nerd, or say "who do you think you are?", but I think it sounds really cool, and pretty nice!... but I really want to know what the public at large thinks.

And please don't let my opinion influence your own!

What do you think of this person's language? Cool, or not cool?

  1. Everyone's different--he's probably in college and learning new words which he wants to be apart of his vocabulary.... I don't see anything wrong with that. There's always going to be people who disagree with something about a person especially if the person isn't doing what they're doing or saying what they're saying... typical; people who don't fit the 'norm' always have a hard time being themself so more power to your friend ;-)

I don't care if he sounds absolutely ridiculous--his mouth... he can say what he wants and speak how he wants.

    IMO:-D

  2. You should use language appropriate to the context.

  3. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong in using sophisticated language. This shows you the levels of education and maturity this person has. Of course, a lot of people think that the use of "big words" is uncool because literature itself have been disappearing and people barely ; if never use this type of intellectual words. For no one is a surprise that today predominant language and variety of words are common words and slang derived from it.

  4. He may be showing off, he may actually know what he is saying. I use big words to insult my enemies without them knowing what the h*** I said. It's fun to watch their puny brains fry trying to understand my superior linguistics.

"You're simian countenance suggests a heritage rich in species diversity" is a favorite I borrowed from Calvin and Hobbes (who says comic books are stupid).

  5. eloquence is no failing, good lady.

i already see he tick yours 'mind' boxes but you seem woried about the "geek "tag - so next time he is commenting on your ensconcement in bed - invite him in, the intellignet guys can often turn out to be a 'dark horse' in that respect. and you might just end up with a smile on your face wider than you knew could fit!

  6. Sounds like he's entranced and exhilerated by this amazing language of ours. He's just a bit carried away right now with the beauty and dynamism of it all.

As Anne of Green Gables said - "If you have big ideas you have to have big words to express them."

At the same time, you can fall over your own feet......

If your friend asks an opinion, suggest that he base his day-to-day vocabulary on the Anglo-Saxon derived words and save the more formal Greek & Latin derivations for more formal occasions.

But we have a great language - enjoy!
