Your quote is derived from Shakespeare's play "As You Like It".  He wrote:  All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players.

He then goes on to say:  They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts

The quote is a brilliant metaphor.  We enter the world and are immediately contributing to this play we call life.  We interact with many other characters and go through different acts(Shakespeare says we go through 7).  The play is not just one genre, but many:  drama, comedy, thriller...  

At the end of the day, life is like a play - we merely go through the stages of our life acting it out.
