A batsman position to bat in his right hand side, then when a bowler bowl the batsman turn to bat at his left side.

I've seen some batsman does (not aussies but I've seen english and indians) this and I even commentators commenting that it is kind of annoyance to the bowler.. what do you think?

  1. its jus a tact to distract the concentration of the bowler

    nt a big deal

  2. bcoz at that position usually, there is no fielder and that shot easily can give 4 runs.

This is where you have seen it, Kevin Pietersen did it against Zimbabwe in the 2007 T20 World Championships. The shots technical term is the "switch hit".

Players who play this shot, need incredible hand-eye co'ordination and timing, if they try the shot too early the bowler could get a wicket, if they try the shot too late then the player could mis-time the shot OR miss the ball altogether.

The shot is very smart, because players use the shot to manipulate the field (just like Kp does in this vid). The bowler has set a right handed field, the bowler is bowling a leg-stump line, BUT if KP switches his hands over and plays the "switch hit" he now has the whole leg-side field to play with, so even if he mis-times the shot it still could go to the boundary. Some experts have said that this shot shouldn't be allowed, as the captain has already set the field for a right hander, so if the batsmen switches hands as the bowler is running up it is unfair !! I don't agree, i think the shot is fair, and if you are talented enough to play the shot then you should try and play it as often as you can

  4. As one who grew up going to Lords and watching the likes of Hutton, Hammond, Compton, Bradman, Miller and Lindwall, I am absolutely appalled!  This is not cricket! But times have changed. Players dress like baseball players, so why not switch hit like baseball players?  Having grown up with cricket and played in the CCC, I never thought that I'd say this;  but having watched baseball for 50 years, it is by far the more demanding game - in every respect.

  5. Did you mean reverse sweep? I think that's what it calls... REVERSE SWEEP.

KooKee.. you have shown correct video, but in my opinion it calls a reverse sweep. And if I remember very well, in 1987, English batsman Graham Gooch surprised Indian team during world cup semifinal and won the game.

  6. KooKee has described it well. But I wish to differ with him and go with those who say the shot should be made illegal. It is grossly unfair to a bowler bowling outside the off stump, in the corridor of uncertainty, to have to end up having "bowled" a ball on the batsman's pads, which can be easily played/flicked away to the legs after the switch is made.
