I don't care for it.  I think you do your child a disservice when you give them such an odd spelling to live with the rest of their life.

How would you pronounce it "mel-ar-nee" when it has no R in it?

This kid is going to be 80 years old and still having to explain her name to people, spell it and pronounce it too.

I would be willing to bet that 90% of the people who like that name have a "normal" spelling and pronouncing name themselves and don't know what it's like to go through life with a name that defies logic.

Coming from someone with a unique name and people who have had difficulty pronouncing it for the past nearly 23 years...

I think it'd be pronounced Mel- LANEE kind of like Milan with an "i" and the end, but that's just my opinion on the pronunciation.

I don't mind the spelling, but my name has always been misspelled and pronounced wrong...so keep that in mind.

Melanie is my name, and I like the spelling. I think it could get a bit confusing. But I've seen the name "Melanie" spelt several different ways. Melenie for example.

When i first saw it i thought it was Mell-ar-ni. I like it but its most likely through her whole life anyone reading her name who doesnt know her will call her Mell-ar-ni. x*x

I'm not huge on botching up a name to make it "unique"...I prefer the traditional so not only is it easier for a child to spell, but to pronounce as well!  And you don't ever hear the question from a teacher, or another form of authority "how do you spell that?".... good luck!

i think i prefer the traditional spelling.  i know a girl who's parents spelled it mellonie.  poor thing gets called mellons.  unusual spelling are not always a good thing.
