Chapter One
Emerald used to think nymphs, if they were real, would be short and skinny creatures with cobalt blue skin tightly stretched across their bodies. They would have huge, green eyes with silver flecks and multiple rows of sharp, white teeth. Nymphs would have thin, white lips and they would also live in water and trick people into coming near. The nymph would then lead the person deeper and deeper into the water, and soon that person would never be seen again.
When Emerald turned 10 years old, she, her parents, her younger sister, Lucy, and her older brother, Jason, moved to a new house. The house was very, very old. Many of the walls had holes and in some places the wallpaper had turned yellow and was peeling. The stove wasn’t working, if anyone tried to turn it on, it only emitted smelly gas, there was no fridge, or any appliances and the whole house reeked. But, Emerald’s father loved a good challenge, and in no time the house was fit to live in. In the back of the house was a small pond and woods behind it. The pond was beautiful, with lilies and blossoming flowers floating on the surface. If Emerald stood still enough, she could see the gold and silver colored fish darting around, much like a bunch of butterflies.
Emerald was 10 years old and was a small girl with fair, golden skin and had long, straight, chocolate colored hair, like her mother, which framed a skinny face. She had thin, strawberry pink lips. Her eyes were the color of an emerald, hence her name. She was a quiet and shy girl, except around her family. At home, she was as wild as her siblings, and sometimes, twice as loud. Nevertheless, Emerald had a remarkable story telling ability. Every night the family would sit down by the fireplace in the living room, and listen to a story Emerald had spun up that day. Her voice would fill the room, the details so vivid you could see them clearly in your head. Her voice would have the same sound you would expect her character to have, and sometimes she would get up and act out her story.
Jason was 2 years older than Emerald. He had brown hair as dark as her’s, but his hair was curly, like his father’s. He was a tall boy and was the first born of all three of the children, so he always had something up his sleeve. He would lead his sisters into the forest to go “exploring†and would leave them there or hide behind a tree and scare them, or would have them join him in doing a naughty trick and generously gave them the blame.
