What do you think orbs really are?

Question

I recently got some pictures with orbs, which strangely seem to always be above my daughter's head. Are these anomolies likely just a coincidence, or is there a supernatural explanation?

There are 2 types that show up in photos, one type is just dust reflecting the flash.  The other type show up in real life and in photos.  This site explains the differences.

Well to be sure you need someone who knows photography, it could be a lot of things, I think that orbs could be a spirit of a loved one, I have seen somethings in my life that are not at all even close to being explainable, so it's possible but if your really wondering take them to a photographer, possibly one that won't laugh it off like it's nothing, but these day this stuff is more accepted then ever, so give it a try. I honestly can't say I haven't seen the pictures, so it's possible it's the lens or the light through the lens or maybe it's the spirit of a loved one who's past and is keeping an eye on her, it's a nice thought anyway.

Orbs are usually a spot on the lens of the camera, dust reflecting off the flash, or a digital camera failing to fill in the pixels (usually due to low light conditions).

However, that said if one turns off the flash, uses high speed film (captures available light better) or infrared film (this can be challenging) and makes sure the lens is clean and you still capture an orb then you at least have something worth examining. Video showing the same orbs at the same location would also be great for comparison.

Also, before I would associate an orb with a haunting I would want other activity as that ghost sightings and hauntings are human experiences. Thus an orb captured after the fact (an investigation where no activity took place) does not qualify as a haunting,

from an investigative standpoint, I have found they are most likely just plain old dust, but............. I believe there are orbs that cant be explained away by the dust  answer. I have several pics that show blue and red orbs. the blue orb has a couple of the run of the mill white dust orbs as well as a yellow street lamp far in th background. I kept the pic because it showed a clear contrast where there is nothing else to explain a blue piece of dust where here is nothing blue around it. I also have a couple of pics of a red orb/light where there should have been none/in some very thick scrub brush in the mountains where there are no homes, no light sources, nothing but deep in the beautiful rocky mountains. And the red "orb" in each of the pics is not reflecting the light, but it is making its own light, and it is very tiny. We were near a very old overgrown children's cemetery from the mining era that has not been used or visited for decades. With a Degree in Electric as well as much time dealing with lighting, not to mention classes in photography at the local college. I think I can tell someone if they are getting a reflection or its emitting its own light.  what they are? that's open to opinion and your gonna get lots of them

Orbs are just collected clumps of free floating energy. It does not signal any paranormal activity.

I had an experience where several friends and I want to visit a "haunted" statue at night.  We took some pictures of ourselves goofing around, and when we looked at the pictures there was an "orb" above the head of the girl in the statue.  At first we thought it was extremely awesome, but when we back in the day, we realized it was just light from the flash reflecting off a plaque on the ground a ways behind the little girl.

I think most orbs can be explained by stuff like this.  A lot of things reflect light.  There's always the possibility of something more, though ^_^

Orbs I've heard are the physical form most spirits take when in the physical realm. But basically, they're spirits. Who they are just depends. Could be spirit guides (angels don't come as orbs, they come as collumns of light), could be deceased relatives come to say hello.
