  1. I have a daycare my self, and why it is rather hard teaching children all of different ages, like when you try to teach a 5 year old math, while you have a 1 year old tearing up the papers! But it can be done. I think like everyone else has said, just like a preschool, maybe not as involved because they can really teach since they are all learning the same things. But at least the basics, such as colors, numbers, writing their name etc. My kids love learning about animals so they should know at lest some names of animals be able to identify them and what sound they make.

    Hope this helps

  2. i think they should learn socialization above all else. they also should begin to think through ideas and be able to apply them to play...role play, beginning math skills, basic language concepts, ... they should be in a setting where they are free to express themselves by having many activities and opportunities available. :)

  3. in a childcare setting they should learn the basics, colors, shapes, numbers, the letters of their names etc, if its a good day care they should teach that to every child.....

  4. It is my opinion that a good child care should not be different from a preschool when it comes to what the child learns. It should be play based with open ended age appropriate activities. They will socialize and learn to control their own behavior.

  5. I agree that a good child care should be no different than a preschool program.

Like others have mentioned...social skills are number one priority :-)

Learning to problem solve, learning to wait their turn, sharing, conversational skills, self-help skills, becoming independent, becoming a curious learning, making choices, how to play on a playground etc.

As for basic concepts:  I find that many a preschool doesn't "teach" these concepts as much as they allow exploration of them.  A good childcare/preschool usually has basic concept materials out daily for exploration.  I find that "centers" in a preschool work best.  There are many a website out there that gives a list of what is learned/experienced in each center.
