  1. To me they proved that they could live up to their potential. They have over a billion people there, giving them a broader variety to select from and also gives them a greater chance of having an elite sportsman. A lot of the best sportsman are ahead of the rest with extra god-given talents. Also, it shows that with enough time and money put into something, you can be good at anything. This was the first year that China had a women's team in the European Handball, yet they collected the gold medal. A lot of that came down to dedication to the athletes. Also, the women's 200m butterfly was won by the Chinese because the used Jess Schipper's training routine that they bought of her coach. So being the strongest country financially (arguably), would also help.

  2.   First of all, they came in second to the US in total medals. The IOC counts ALL medals, not just gold, so China only garnered the most gold medals.

Not sure what it proves when a country that "hot houses" its athletes wins a lot of medals. Communist Russia and the Iron Curtain countries used to win a lot of medals but it all came at a big expense.

People are starving in China, the air is filthy and yet they are wasting $$$ trying to prove what exactly while their citizens suffer?

  3. That they are are here, and their time is now.  China is growing to be the supreme superpower of the 21st century.

  4. lots of people and money, brings lots of medals
