  1. Thinkg were different for travel in the old days say in 1940 and 1950s. There were no reservations, No sleeping berths. No direct trains. All engines were steam running. Engines require frequent watering and coal supplies. Engines were changes at inportant junctions. There were no catering in the trains and food was sold at important stations. The length of train wa small with 8 or 9 bogies.

Still earlier days candle lights were provided intrains in the night. Many of the stations were with kerosene lamps and signalling was also with kerosene lamps.

Manual issue of tickets was in force.Childrens tickets were cut into half.

Connecting trains were not available immediately  at junctions  as such the passengers had to wait long for connecting trains.

Good food was available. Passenger used to cook food in the stations before boarding the connecting trains.

  2. The greatest problem those days, say from the 20s to 50s, was that long distance traveling was costly and rarely available. Aeroplanes had already been invented, but they were very hard to afford for many. And in those days, people didn't have airports in every city, like it's nowadays.

Trains and ships were most popular for long distance journeys, for they were generally cheaper than air travel. But traveling by ships was a long affair. If you had to go from London to Singapore or Mumbai or Hong Kong, it would take you a long time. Also, travel by ships was dangerous, a sinking was quite common. I think travel by trains was best, for it was affordable, fast and safe too, but it was polluting as most engines ran by steam.

I guess life was pretty hard those days! I'm thankful I'm now in the 21st century. God is kind to us, after all! :-)

  3. Travel in those days was pretty hard as there was less modern transportation facilities available then.
