It's very much like in learning another language you appreciate your native tongue and understand it better.

Refresh you.  Enrich you with cultural awareness.

Learn to travel light (distinguishing what is essential and non-essential).

Appreciate clean drinkable water that is readily available and cheap at home.  Nature's beauty.  Taste new flavours.  Accept new experiences or at least develop a tolerance for difference.  Find new ideas.

Meet new people.

Are you asking why it is good to travel?

- rest and relaxation

- it helps a person to take a break from the daily grind (I.E. work, school, etc ...)

There are so many things to see in this world, and if you have the chance to travel, study up a little before hand so you can know a little about the place you are going to see.  It is much more fun to be looking forward to seeing something really interesting if your interest is peaked.  I know that everything doesn't need to be educational, but think of the great conversations you will be able to have at dinner parties if you have been somewhere and learned something.

I have traveled extensively, still do, and without out exception, I always try to read up on the place I am traveling to so that I can check out historic places, local celebrations, and other things like that.  One year I decided to go to Ireland, and while I was reading I came upon a very brief story about a legendary "lace maker."  I went to the town where she lives, and I was able to purchase some of the most incredible lace I have ever seen.  This year, I am not traveling, because my family is all coming home for the month of August, but they will tell me stories of their travels, and I will learn something from them.  Get out there, and enjoy the world!  Be a good citizen, and get to know your fellowmen (or women).
