to pretend it to escape and for some to face reality is not alway something that is easy to swallow so to pretend or to daydream is their means of coping.

It's when you slip away from reality. Basically saying slipping into the imaginary world takes us wherever we want, that we can get away from the here and now and that relaxes a person, helping them to calm down.
