What do you think the reason is for Muslims leaving their religion in droves?

Ahmad al-Qataani, leader of the Companions Lighthouse for the Science of Islamic Law, was quoted in an al-Jazeera interview; "Everyday, 16,000 Muslims convert to Christianity. Every year, 6 million Muslims convert to Christianity".

The reason must be very compelling in view of the fact that apostasy is punishable by death in Afghanistan, Comoros, Iran, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen. It is also illegal in Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Maldives, Oman, and Qatar.

According to research by Dr. Ilyas Ba-Yunus, 75 percent of New Muslim Converts in the US leave Islam within a few years.

I already answered this question when you asked it in the R & S section.  I reproduce it below.

For starters I'd like to see what data Ahmad al-Qataani is collecting to make that assessment. It's easy to make a statement, quite another to back it up. Not saying he'd lie or have a reason to lie, but I'd still like to see the data.

But even if it is true, I think Muslims who leave Islam are doing so because their leaders are not teaching true Islam. While Islam teaches no compulsion in religion, Muslim leaders the world over are going against this fundamental teaching.

The countries that you mentioned are examples of what Islam should NOT be. If the only Islam I was ever taught was one that compels people and teaches to "destroy the west,", and the alternative was "beleive in Jesus and you're in heaven," - then it only makes sense that people would accept the latter religion. Especially if I had no formal education. Sadly, these Muslim countries you mentioned are also among the lowest in literacy in the world.

That being said, it doesn't make the latter teaching correct by any stretch. Furthermore, my point still stands, if those people are really leaving Islam, its not because Islam has flaws, but because the people practicing Islam are not practicing it properly.

Whatever the case, Islam is still the fastest growing religion in the world, undisputed. People can make excuses for "brith rates" etc, but they're unfounded and weak excuses. The truth is, Islam is growing faster than any religion, alhumdolillah.

Statistically those figures are extremely bloated and there is no logical statistical method with a low margin of error that can prove such figures. The evidence they use is based on a sample group which itself is not substantiated.

The figures are skewed and if you run a regression on it then you'll see the falsity of the study itself and the sample size they used cannot accommodate the actual figures.

There are people who may leave but I doubt the statistics given. I think the main reasons for those who leave are ignorance or lack of knowledge. Also, sometimes people cannot keep in touch or they don't get support from other members of society. If their belief is not strong enough, they may slowly drift away and ultimately leave. You have to give religion time and keep in touch. If you take one step towards God he will take ten steps towards you.

  It also helps to be part of a group. It is said that every animal has a predator and man's predator is the devil. If a man is alone he becomes easy prey. But it is difficult for the devil to attack a group.

  As regards some of these ex-muslims, I doubt it very much if they were muslims in the first place. They may have been hypocrites but not true muslims. Hypocrites appeared even during the lifetime of the prophet. Many of them used to pray and apparently followed Islam but in reality they did not believe in it and were trying to undermine it from within.

Ex-Muslims were not Muslims in the first place.

They were maybe Muslims in passports or birth certificates.

So they are Muslims on papers only.

Real Muslims who studies Islam will never leave the religion of Haq (truth).

And one more thing , Some actors come and act as "Muslims" who left Islam .

We Muslims don't buy such drama.

Its all about the media portraying lies and many ppl like u believe them.

I would be very interested to know the reasons why as I'm sure there are many.  I would assume that most of them leave because they don't believe in Islam or what the quran says, but I'm sure  many leave because they find it too difficult to follow all the archaic rules.  I do know that most Muslims answer questions like these saying that someone hurt them and that's why they left because it is difficult for them to believe a person would leave because they don't believe in the religion.

Edit:  To the first few answerers:  the same thing can be said about anyone who leaves one religion for another, they were never truly members of the religion they left and truly never believed in it.  That doesn't make them special because they chose a different religion, it just means they either did not believe it or found it too difficult to follow.  It's funny how you say they were never Muslims to begin with when most Muslims say everyone is born a Muslim.  You can't have it both ways now can you.

Well i personally never meat someone who has converted from islam but i dont believe it doesnt exist.

some people are muslim, but by name, they dont actually practice islam. just like some say they are christians but do nothing to prove it.

and some people that convert from islam, may not have been treated well by their muslim familys as they were growing up.

but the biggest reason is that they may be so sick and tired, of people calling them terrorists, and having a tough life with such small iman, that they just decide to not be muslim anymore.

for those people, may allah have mercy on them, because they have made a big mistake, and have suffered a great loss.

@ Who am i ?, some people just  choose to not believe in islam, or any religion cuz they say it is impossible. they say how could there be, or thats not real.

but think of it this way, if you are sitting down with a big wall in front of you, how will you know what is behind that wall? you cant see through it, but just cuz you cant see through it, it doesnt mean there is nothing behind it.

you have to open your mind and realize that there is more than what you can see with your own to eyes.
