What do you think this mutant bug is?

It looks like a gigantic grasshopper. It is about the size of my hand (6 inches long). My husband had the exterminator look at it and it even scared him! The exterminator sprayed insecticide on it, but it took quite a large dose before it died. My husband sprayed another one with water and it didn't phase it at all. I"m not bothered by them, but my kids and husband are freaked by them. Wish I had a picture for you. Any ideas on what it could be?

  1. what desert

    plus wouldn't the exterminator know?

  2. If it looks like a large grasshopper chances are it was a large grasshopper. It could have also been some kind of cricket. If you could provide more of a description, such as color, markings, limb-length etc that would be helpful. Also, what desert you live in. They could be locusts if there are a lot of them, but if you only see them once in a while on their own then I doubt it. Locusts are the result of certain species of grasshoppers becoming over-crowded and rubbing together in such a way that they turn into locusts, so I highly doubt you would find just one.

  3. I would hazard a guess that it would be a locust. I don't think locusts have wings all their life or maybe one s*x does not have them all their life. But a locust is the only thing I can think of to match your description. If you look it up on the net am sure u will find pics of locusts. You must have internet access to put your question on this site.

  4. If it looks like a large grasshopper, its most probebly a Locust!

  5. Tell me exactly where you live and in what country, AND supply me with a photo and I'll tell you what it is.

Descriptions of insects, by non-Entomologists, are far too inaccurate to allow true identification.

  6. Grasshoppers can get quite large. We had large yellow grasshoppers that grew to 4-6 inches in south florida. This site is a great resource for looking up bugs http://www.whatsthatbug.com/
