A theory recently put forward states that the planet is growing in size, this would explain the reason why continents were being 'pulled apart'.

If the planet is truly growing in size and the evidence of that is the continents that are being pulled apart, then how do they explain the continents that are gliding into each other? To prove that the planet is growing they'll have to prove that all continents are gliding away from each other and they are not.
