I work at a children's farm. The farm sells bags of feed for the animals priced at 50p each. Sometimes there is no body sitting behind the stall because we are short staffed and are busy doing animal care jobs. When there is someone sitting behind the stall that person is supposed to hand the food other to the customers and take the money, but allot of people especially regulars are taking bags of feed and them putting the money in the box as if that person was not there. Most of the time but not always that person is me.

  1. They're probably just used to doing it themselves because as you say, you're short-staffed and there isn't always someone there to take the money. I wouldn't take it personally.

  2. Your place has a staffing problem.  Visitors should not have to wait.  Just put an enclosed jar with a slot on top and ask peolpe to donate.  They might even put in more than the 50p.  I doubt folks are going to steal a small bag of animal vittles with their children/grandkids around.

  3. As long as they're paying for it, I wouldn't worry that much about it.  If there's no one at the stall on a regular basis people probably just get in the habit of dropping the money in and don't think about it.

  4. I don't think I really see the problem, other than not following proper protocol, as long as the customers are paying.  The end result is the same whether you put the money in the box or they do.  Regulars especially may just be trying to help you out because they can see that you are busy.  I wouldn't take offense to it if I were you.
